2025 AI / Social Media - Points of Orientation

1. AI is a Tool of Bourgeois Exploitation

The current AI landscape is dominated by corporations and elites who prioritize profit over public welfare. Tech companies like Meta, Google, and TikTok exploit user data to maximize ad revenue, reinforcing their monopoly over digital platforms while workers bear the costs of job displacement.

Party Perspective: Advocate for public ownership of AI infrastructure, ensuring algorithms prioritize transparency, accountability, and equitable access. Demand strict regulation of corporate AI to prevent labor displacement and misinformation campaigns that fracture working-class solidarity.

2. Social Media: A Battleground for Ideological Control

Social media platforms, owned by capitalist elites, amplify division and commodify user engagement. Studies show affective polarization has risen, with platforms like X (Twitter) and Facebook exacerbating political hostility to drive ad profits. All people are increasingly reliant on social media for news and face algorithmic manipulation that prioritizes sensationalism over class-based analysis. Internationally, Facebook’s lack of non-english language content moderation has fueled violence and allowed bad actors to spread hate speech because under capitalism, the driving force behind social media is engagement, regardless of the cost.

Party Perspective: Push for democratization of social media governance, including worker-led oversight boards and bans on surveillance capitalism. Support laws requiring platforms to disclose algorithmic biases and reinvest profits into public-interest journalism. Support for universal access to high speed internet and digital literacy programs for all

3. Building International Solidarity Against Tech Imperialism

U.S. tech giants like Google and Meta exploit global labor and data, while the ruling class’s anti-China rhetoric (e.g. banning TikTok) masks protectionism for American capital. Meanwhile, AI-driven surveillance tools reinforce the colonial status quo

Party Perspective: Oppose tech imperialism (e.g. Meta’s monopoly on messaging in global south countries with Whatsapp, and the barriers imposed by the U.S. on countries developing their own tech and other industries) and promote international worker alliances to regulate cross-border data exploitation. Support open-source AI development and resist xenophobic policies that scapegoat foreign tech while ignoring domestic capitalist abuses.
